Yikes! I really don't update this much, do i ? Well, i've been busy during the semester, and i hardly think people wanna read what homework i was doing each night ;) That'd be mega boring, right ? ;) Anywho, tomorrow I start my Mid-Semester break. Thats gonna finally gimme some time to do what i've been meaning to do for the past 2 months. I did some large network rearrangements in the past few days. Partly cuz i wanna get away from using Windows NT 5.0 (Win2000), and partly cuz i wanna run a CURRENT Machine, following RELENG_5. My Dual PIII-500 w/192mb ram is my X Workstation running FreeBSD 4.0 on XF 4.0 My Dual P200 w/64mb ram is now my FreeBSD 5.0 machine, so i can follow the developments in -CURRENT, and try and grok the kernel. Won't that be easy. NOT. :) I think its time i made the jump into kernel space and tried to learn whats happening up there tho. Userspace is all fun and all, but i like doing systems type programming. So i think the kernel would be my type of cake. I guess we'll see. I might come screaming back to userspace tomorrow ;)
I needed SB Live! Support. Badly. Someone mentioned it was in FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT. I was desperate. Sooo. I copied the emu10.c/h files over from 5.0 and put them into 4.0. Included them into the kernel source tree, modified my kernel config, and recompiled. Hrm. Failed. Turns out some of the function prototypes for pcm have already changed. (They don't waste time in -CURRENT, do they?). No problem, it was just an extra NULL pointer. Take it out, recompile, builds. Woo! Reboot. Wait for kernel to boot. *expecting kernel to blow up* bender:~> cat /dev/sndstat FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Apr 1 2000 18:29:15 Installed devices: pcm0: <Creative EMU10K1> at io 0xdc00 irq 11 (1p/0r channels duplex) bender:~> Oooh. Cool. It worked. *tries xmms*. Wow, it plays perfectly. My first kernal hack ever ;) I was pretty impressed it all worked prefectly too. Needless to say, that gave me the courage to delve further into the kernel ....
Well, i had some fun hacking around in 5.0-Current ;) Tho the kernel hacks were sweet, they were also quite useless. Nevertheless, its all good because i'm familarizing myself with kernel data structures (such as the proc list), and so on. I got a few things i wanna do to syscons, (and hopefully have them commited to FreeBSD) but after looking at that code .......
Hi Chrrisssss !!!!! ;) M00000000000000000000000000!!!!!!!!!!!! |
