Martian Time System

Martian Time System
--------------------

There are two time systems i am infavour of.

The 24:60:60 and 25:60:60 system.

Of the two, my preference is the 25hr system, and from the people i have
talked to, this system is also the preferred system. Even if for the
simple reason, people always whine "I wish there were more hours in a
day", well, on mars you WOULD have more hours in a day ;).

Also, a martian day == 24 hrs, 39.5 minutes (Terran).

To implement a 24hr martian system, the length of second/minute/earth need
to be strenched, more, then they would need to be shrunk for a 25hr
martian system.

And anyway, 25hrs just sounds cool.

Nasa, unfortunately, has already decided upon the 24hr system and has used
it on their probes to date.

Names ?
--------

What names should be used for the Martian version of 'second', 'minute',
and 'hour' ?

There are many good suggestions on the martian time website, and i
personally cannot decide.

I think we should stick to the current system, and simply say
Thour
Tminute
Tsecond
Mhour
Mminute
Msecond

When we need to distinguish between a Terran and Martian time unit. Once a
colony is established, i am sure the people down there will come up with
their own names over time, which would become the new standard.

Remember, under a 25hr system, Mhour/Mminute/Msecond are slightly
*shorter* then their Terran equivelants. 1 Martian Hour is actually
around 59minutes and 30 seconds on earth. So its ~30 seconds shorter.

Under a 24hr system, Mhour/Mminute/Msecond are not-as-slightly longer then
their Terran equivelants. 1 Martian Hour is actually around 1hr 1
minutes on earth. So its ~1 minute longer.

Send in your votes? And remember, being COOL is a very valid reason to
pick a 25hr system. And no, theres no real reason at all (technical, or
otherwise) why a 24hr system would be better. It really makes no
difference at all.

So, for the first time ever, this, and everything else on this site (like
the calendar system) is entirely based upon the Coolness Factor!

Cool, isn't it ?
